Wrangler Plug-In Hybrid Dubbed 4XE Will Hit Showrooms This Year
It's only been a few months since we first saw the Wrangler 4xe, but it's already headed to production.
Coming Soon
Back in January at the 2020 CES trade show in Las Vegas, Jeep brought along three plug-in hybrid concepts, including the Wrangler 4xe. At that time, the automaker provided little information about these vehicles, including when they might actually be produced and sold. But now, it appears that the Wrangler plug-in hybrid is headed to production even sooner than we might have guessed.

Electrifying News
This was confirmed by Fiat-Chrysler CEO Mike Manley during the automaker's annual general meeting, which was held online this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. "Jeep's icon the Wrangler will arrive on the market with a 4xe version that will be on the front line of our electrification strategy in North America," Manley said.

Set a Date
Manley also confirmed that the company was planning on a real global reveal of the Wrangler 4xe in the third quarter of this year before it arrives in U.S. showrooms by the end of the year. The plug-in hybrid Wrangler will then land in Europe and China a few months later in early 2021.

Additional Models
All electrified Jeeps will sport the 4xe badge, and the Wrangler is just the first of many to come. FCA wants to offer hybrid versions of all of its models by 2022 to help meet increasing emissions standards in many parts of the world. In addition to the Wrangler, the Jeep Compass and Renegade 4xe models will go on sale in Europe by early July.

Future Models
As far as other models like the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer go, no mention was made as to when we might see plug-in hybrid versions of any of them. The new SUV is scheduled to begin production soon, as Jeep's plant in Warren is currently going through the retooling process to prepare for that changeover.

Rumored Drivetrain
There's been no confirmation as to what sort of drivetrain will power the Wrangler 4xe just yet, but many believe that it will utilize Jeep's 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four-cylinder with the eTorque system, and will be mated to a new ZF-sourced 8-speed plug-in hybrid automatic transmission. That would give the Wrangler 4xe roughly 31 miles of electric-only range.

Best Wrangler Yet?
Plug-in hybrids are a nice compromise between a regular hybrid and fully electric vehicles, offering the best of both worlds in a way. And we're betting that the Wrangler 4xe will also pack more power than any existing model in the lineup. Depending on price and fuel economy figures, this might just be the best Wrangler of all, too.
