Gladiator proportions fit very nicely with only two doors

There are very few vehicles which can match a Jeep Wrangler for off-road ability. And with Jeep now offering the Gladiator pick-up configuration, those who like their unstoppable off-roader with an open load area are in luck. But what if you want a single-cab version? Well...

Lighting the way for a future Jeep two-door truck

Jeep's J6 concept shows just how doable a two-door Gladiator can be. Built by Jeep technicians and engineers, it uses the Wrangler Rubicon platform in order to ensure pure peerless off-road ability. And yes, you counted correctly: those are no less than twelve additional LED light pods they have added to it for maximum visibility.

More space for stuff in the back

The Jeep J6 concept features a fully custom body, and it looks as good from the rear as it does viewed from the front. Although this Jeep concept truck is shorter than the Gladiator production pick-up truck (by only 18-inches), it does have a larger load area: measuring six feet in length.

All the go-anywhere ability of a Wrangler - and more

As with any Jeep, the off-road ability of the vehicle was a non-negotiable for the team tasked with building this concept. The truck rolls on huge 37-inch tires, wrapped around bead lock rims. A two-inch lift kit ensures less snagging when attempting to traverse challenging terrain and in case of a traction issue and crabbing in any severely rocky environment, there are reinforced rock rails.

Classic 3.6 V6 to roll it along

Huge off-road specification tires have immense rolling resistance and weight. Getting them to spin freely requires power - a lot of power, and low-range gearing. To ensure the Jeep J6 concept truck can churn along effortlessly in the sand, where power is required to provide adequate momentum. Under the hood, there is a 3.6-liter naturally-aspirated V6 engine. Rated at 285hp, it drives through an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Fifth wheel is on top, not below

Occupying pride of place in the J6 concept's load bin is a full-size spare wheel, mounted on the back - instead of below. There's also a tri-tube rollover hoop, which has been shaped to complement the pick-up truck proportions and balance between the cab and load area. Integrated into the rear step-bumper are two recovery points, both finished in red - which ensure you can't miss them when they are needed.

Brilliant blue inside - too

The J6 concept has similar switchgear and cabin architecture to any other production Jeep Wrangler. There are a few additional switched to control the collection of LED lighting options but most striking is the continuation of that fantastic blue exterior paint, on the inside. The color pays homage to a hue which was optional on the 1978 Jeep Honcho pick-up truck.

Will it happen?

Although Jeep won't commit to a production schedule for the J6 two-door pick-up truck, there is no doubt that this is a very tidily executed concept. Almost too tidy, to remain in the realm of a one-off design study. Many of the components are already used in other Wranglers and with the Gladiator four-door pick-up truck proving very popular, there is a good chance that Jeep can add a two-door version in the future.
