PSC Motorsports JK Steering Gear Kit Solves One Big Problem
The JK doesn't have too many areas of opportunity, but this big bore steering gear kit addresses one of them.
1. PSC Motorsports Big Bore XD Steering Gear
We already know that the Jeep JK is one seriously tough piece of machinery right off the showroom floor. But the stresses of off-road driving, coupled with larger tires and a bigger front diff locker, can lead to a broken steering sector shaft. To prevent that from happening and keep your JK from getting stranded in the wilderness, PSC Motorsports has developed what it calls the Big Bore XD. And the good guys over at Four Wheeler tested it out recently on a 2013 Unlimited Rubicon to see if it could live up to the hype.
2. What's it all About?
The Big Bore XD steering gear is a bolt-on part designed for Jeep JKs running 37" or larger tires. It isn't designed for hardcore rock crawlers and off-road racers, but rather to fill the void between a stock steering gear and a full-on hydraulic assist steering system. PSC's steering gear is 35% stronger than stock, and it helps ease steering with an 80mm piston. The kit also comes with a new pitman arm and larger nut.
3. Upgrading a JK
The folks at Four Wheeler just happened to have a 2013 Unlimited Rubicon with 35" tires laying around, so the Big Bore seemed like a perfect fit. This particular JK serves as a daily driver that also hits the trails on occasion and does some long-distance overlanding. After bolting on the new steering gear, they headed over to Moab to do some real world testing.
4. Testing the Upgrade
Getting to Moab required a 5,000 mile drive from North Carolina. Which is a pretty good way to get a feel for something. Four Wheeler reports that steering feel was significantly lighter after the upgrade, as well as more responsive. That's the kind of benefit you'll feel not only in the desert, but also while navigating tight city streets.
5. Off-Road Report
The transition to unpaved surfaces didn't change Four Wheeler's opinion of the new steering gear, either. Steering remained light and responsive, and the Jeep tracked true while climbing over obstacles. Clearly, it's no replacement for hydraulic assisted steering. But it does greatly improve feel and response at a fraction of the price.
