Off-Roading Through Hawaiian Rain Forests on the Amazing Munro Trail
Off-roading the Munro Trail in Lanai, Hawaii is the definition of living the dream, if you're known to dream big.
1. Munro Trail
The Munro Trail is a 12.8 mile road that is only one lane wide for most of its length. Located north of Lanai city on the Island of Lanai, this breathtaking trail offers some of the best scenery Hawaii has to offer. Starting near the Four Season's resort, is winds and climbs through Hawaii's famous rain forest to the highest point on the island. This trail can be tackle on a hike, on a bicycle, or off-roading in a capable SUV.
2. Terrain
The one lane trail goes through the rainforest, where you will be surrounded by ohia lehua, ironwood, eucalyptus, and pine trees throughout your 12.8-mile journey. The off-road trail can become rather challenging if the dirt is wet, and most experienced off-roaders don't recommend you even attempt the drive if it's raining.
3. Elevation View
Throughout the trail climb, you can see scenic views through the rainforest, like the Maunalei gulch. From various places along the way you can also see other Hawaii islands, like Maui, Molokai, Kahoolawe, the big island, and Oahu. The trail tops out at 3,370 feet, on the peak of Lanaihale, which is the highest spot on the island.
4. The Journey
On a normal, dry day, the climb to the top should take approximately two hours, however, the views along the way are incredible, so you may need to add an hour just for picture breaks. The best view of all of Hawaii happens 2.5-miles into the trail, where you will be able to see numerous islands from a scenic lookout if the conditions are clear.
5. Jeep Rental
No one expects visitors to bring their Jeeps to Lanai, but don't sweat it, there are two car rental agencies that offer 4x4 Jeep vehicles for rent. The trail isn't the most difficult off-roading you will ever do, but it is dangerous nonetheless. The one-lane road offers some difficulties along the way, but if you tackle it in good weather, slow, steady speeds, and maneuver carefully, you should have the time of your life.
