Electrifying Offerings

The future, as they say, it electric. And Jeep is certainly going to jump on this train with a host of hybrid vehicles for the near future, as we learned at 2020 Consumer Electronics Show. It was there that FCA brought along three new hybrid versions of the Jeep Wrangler, Compass, and Renegade, all sporting a new "4xe" badge, which is a play on the traditional 4x4 logo. And they're just the first of what Jeep promises will be a full lineup of electrifying vehicles by the 2022 model year.

Future Is Now

CES seemed like the perfect place to show off these three new models and their exciting technology. Jeep plans to use electricity to modernize its brand and become the leader in “green” eco-friendly premium technology. Jeep promises that its electric vehicles will be the most efficient and responsible Jeep vehicles ever, providing absolute and quiet open-air freedom while taking performance, 4x4 capability, and driver confidence to the next level.

More Fun

Jeep also notes that these plug-in hybrid vehicles offer greater torque and immediate engine response than their gas (and diesel) powered brethren, which translates to an even more fun-to-drive experience on the road and more capability than ever off the road.

Blend of Both

Perhaps more importantly, the addition of hybrid models will enable Jeep and Fiat Chrysler to meet U.S. fuel economy and emissions standards, as well as shed their gas-guzzling image. Somewhat of a compromise between old and new technology, plug-in hybrids offer up a certain range of all-electric driving with the traditional internal-combustion engine serving as a backup for longer trips.

Scant Details

For now, Jeep didn't provide any more details on these new models. It did note at CES that additional information about the Jeep Wrangler, Compass and Renegade 4xe vehicles, which debut this year, will be provided at the Geneva, New York and Beijing auto shows. But from their previous showings, we do know a little about the Compass and Renegade, at least.

Few Specs

Both of those models sport a 1.3-liter turbocharged gas engine coupled with an electric motor. Combined output is said to be somewhere between 190 and 240 horsepower, though those numbers have yet to be finalized. On battery power alone, the Compass and Renegade will travel around 31 miles, with a top speed of around 81 mph

Wait and See

That makes this hybrid duo a nice, economical option for those who don't have long daily commutes. Owners could theoretically make their round trip to work each day without burning a drop of gas. But as far as these hybrid's acceptance among off-road enthusiasts goes, well, we'll just have to wait and see how that pans out.
