Could You See a Version of This Jeep in the Future?
16 years after its debut, the Jeep Treo concept still looks like an idea that might just work in the real world.
Old Concept, Future Production Vehicle?
Even though it's now 16 years old, the Jeep Treo concept still looks pretty futuristic, which is a true testament to its incredibly unique design. It's hard to believe that this vehicle made its public debut way back in 2003 at the Tokyo Motor Show. And even though it never made it to production, there is reason to believe the Treo might just work in today's world.
Hot Segment
For starters, tiny SUVs and crossovers are all the rage these days. Automakers are scrambling to come up with new models in this segment, and consumers are buying them up like hot cakes. This, despite the fact that gas prices remain near bargain basement levels.

Tiny Appeal
That includes Jeep, who are currently working on building a vehicle even smaller than the already small Renegade. You know, something like the Treo. a do-it-all vehicle that combines Jeep's fun off-road tradition with a handful of futuristic features guaranteed to appeal to younger folks.

Forward Thinking
That all starts with the Treo's forward-thinking drivetrain, which consists of twin electric motors that run on hydrogen. It might not have been as viable back in 2003, but this sort of power most certainly is realistic today.

Pint Sized Off Roader
That high-tech pair of engines is backed up by an automatic transmission that sends power to, of course, all four wheels. Because you can't dub this a proper Jeep without giving it four-wheel drive, right?

Unique Proportions
That's pretty much where all conventional comparisons end, however. The Treo is a truly unique vehicle, starting with its 2+1 seating arrangement. It's also quite the funky looking vehicle, with a body that's wider in the front than the rear.

Double Duty
There are a pair of tiny wings out back, which double as racks to carry two Jeep Rubicon-branded bicycles. Which, if you think about it, fits perfectly with what young folks are looking for these days. A vehicle that is capable of fitting in tight urban spaces while also giving you a way to head to the mountains for weekend escapes.

Small but Usable
And trust us, the Treo is the perfect size for shrinking city parking spaces. Measuring in at just 127.3-inches long, it makes the Renegade (166.6) look like a mid-sizer. Despite this, the third seat was designed to fold up and give the owner pretty decent space for luggage or other necessities.

Highly Adaptable
Quite a bit of thought went into making the Treo a very usable vehicle. Things like drive-by-wire steering and placing an electric engine at each axle make for a fairly roomy interior. The steering column, instrument panel, and pedals even slide easily from side to side so the Treo could be sold in a variety of markets.

Daily Fun Machine
Having said all that, it's still hard to imagine Jeep putting the Treo concept into production as is. But it could give us a pretty good idea of what to expect from their new, sub-Renegade 'ute. A tiny but practical vehicle that makes the perfect weekday commuter and weekend fun machine!
