Compass

In the world of Jeeps, most of us would like to own a Wrangler Rubicon loaded up with all the goodies. Unfortunately, many of us don't have the coins required for the entry fee on that one. This is where the Compass comes in. With a starting tab of $23K, it is affordable if the option list is kept short. Its main mission is for commuting on the pavement, but with the right equipment, it is capable off the pavement. No, it isn't going to keep up with a Wrangler when the going gets rough, but for light-duty off-roading, it is a good place to begin.

Engine

The only engine offered is a 2.4 liter rated at 180 horsepower, and 175 lbs./ft. of torque. A six-speed manual gearbox is a standard or six-speed automatic for more money if you get the two-wheel drive. For playing in the dirt, the optional all-wheel drive is welcome and is attached to the 9-speed automatic. Fuel economy for the 2WD with a manual box is 23/32 mpg or 22/31 with six gear auto. The Compass shown here has the 9-speed with AWD and is rated at 22/30 mpg.

Controls

There are five settings on a mode control knob: AUTO, SNOW, SAND, MUD, and 4WD LOCK. The latter should be used to drive OUT of trouble, not to drive-in! All other switches and buttons inside the cabin are very simple, thus easy to operate.

Controls #2

Like most vehicles today, the engine has a "START/STOP feature. This shuts the engine off at stoplights in an attempt to save fuel. Some drivers find this operation annoying, so the button on the left (marked A) turns this system off. Next to that is the electric parking brake and traction control disconnect.

Instruments

The gauge cluster looks nice, with two large dials, and an information pod in the middle.

Wheels

This Compass is the Limited version that comes with 18x7 inch polished aluminum wheels. The tires are designed for street use, but with the excellent AWD system, traction is not a problem on most dirt roads.

Off-road

For best off-road ability, shoppers should check out a Compass with the Trailhawk package. It comes with low range gearing, crawl mode, higher ground clearance, hill descent, skid plates, tow hooks, and all-terrain tires. Our Limited Compass shown here didn't have these goodies but is still capable of many desert trails. In any case, we never got stuck!

POV

The Compass is intended to be driven more on the streets than dirt, and this it does well. The power steering feels great for an electric unit, and the ride is comfortable enough. The best real-world fuel economy was 26 mpg on the highway. The gas tank capacity is slightly smaller than other Jeeps at only 13.5 gallons.

Price

The base price of a Compass starts at $23K. This Limited begins at $29,905. But that options list can grow, and this example is loaded with EVERYTHING. Nothing on the order form was left blank, so the total $39,130 price was no surprise. While Jeep dealers don't offer much discounting on their money-making Wranglers and Gladiators, the Compass has more flexible room in their price. Make your best deal.
