Default Why are our JK"S so loud

when i was back in africa i drove a rubicon seemingly identical to my own (just different bumper for foreign market) and now can not get over how loud my jeep is. it was also a manual but in that you could hit 4000 - 4500 revs and not even notice - on mine at 3500 it starts to become obnoxiously loud.
what u guys think?

... also it came from Chrysler so no after market mods had been done to it.

Many countries (and even individual states/districts within those countries) have different design rules for registerable vehicles, so maybe the one you drove had a different muffler or exhaust system fitted as it was an export model? Then again, usually the way to reduce intrusion of engine & road noise into the cabin is by sound-deadening insulation, so maybe it had extra fitted behind to the firewall (perhaps for the heat, being in Africa)?

I do know that many imported vehicles where I am (Australia) have completely different exhaust systems to the ones fitted to the vehicle in it's country of manufacture, though I think my JK's system the same as the US ones judging by the pics I've seen on this forum. I know that when I hit 4000RPM WOT in my 6-speed my ears certainly know all about it!

WOW, I on the other hand cannot believe how quiet the wifes 07 JK unlimited is, as compared to my 94 XJ with the 4.0 I6. Even the next door neighbors newer Ford Explorer is louder. I guess it's a relative thing.

Mines so quiet sometimes I'll forget that I'm putting along in 3rd unitil I look down and see I'm at 4 grand. My tires do have a zone at around 20-25mph that they howl pretty good

Our JKU is much quieter than my Dodge Ram 3500 5.9L CTD with Straight pipe. Serious note I have to look sometimes at the Tach as I sometimes think I stalled the JKU it runs so quiet!

I'm with you...I've been driving a Dodge 2500 CTD since Feb 2005. The JK is amazingly quiet. Although I took the carpet out of it today because the damned carpet was still wet from Tuesday. I can't think of any reason to put it back, so, we'll see.

It is not loud at all, had a 1999 ford f150 headers and gibson exhaust , now that was loud.
