I don't know much about gearing, so could someone please educate me, 3.73 vs 4.10. Just bought a 2014 JKUR, manual transmission, so it has the 4.10's. My ONLY complaint about this Jeep is the lack of acceleration. I'm usually switching to 5th gear at 45 mph. And I know it's not supposed to be a speed demon. My 2010 two door sport accelerated just fine and that was with the old engine. Is this because of the gearing of the 4.10's? Are 3.73's better for faster acceleration and less shifting?

No my friend this is not correct... The 4.10 gears will allow you to accelerate faster than the 3.73... And I am shocked with what you wrote the 2012-14 have a much much more powerful power plant compared to the 2010, the simple fact you had a 2 door vs your now current 4 door is the only reason based on what you wrote you should feel any difference in acceleration... 2 door is lighter... But to make one thing clearer as a side note, the 4.10 will limit your top speed vs the 3.73...

I wonder if the engine is powerful enough to reach the same maximum rpm with either gear ratio.
With 3.73, the engine has less advantage over the tires, and would be asked to propel the JK against the increased drag of a higher velocity.

Excellent point. And one which affects which gear ratio would get the best gas mileage, as well. There is a point of diminishing returns when gearing to increase MPG. The Jeep engineers fine tune this to a gnat's behind, because they're being driven by CAFE. But, once we start modifying--drag, tires, weight, etc--all bets are off.

If I owned a Rubi X I'd call it that, instead of just "X". That way it wouldn't be confused with the X I have, which also came with a six speed and 4.10 gears. But a Dana 30 up front. A 2.73 transfer case. No lockers. Etc. ;-)

Thanks for the education, but a couple more questions... My 2010 2d manual didn't need to be shifted nearly as frequently as my new 2014 JKUR manual. What's the reason for more frequent shifting in the 2014? Also, I'll be driving the JKUR from KY to FL in a few weeks. At interstate speeds of 75-80 mph I know I'll be sitting around 3000-3500 rpm's in 6th gear. Is this safe for the engine / transmission? Sorry to be such a pita with all the questions. I just want to know some of the more technical aspects. I plan on keepin this baby til the wheels fall off.

You probably had 3.21 gears with a 2010 sport. This would keep you from shifting as much as a 2014 with 4.10 s.
