It used to be with jasper motors that they would only warranty the motor if you replaced the radiator, water pump and a long list of other things along with it, and they really didn’t tell you everything they wanted replaced until after you wanted warranty work, we used them once by customers request and refused to after that mess was finally rejected by jasper and we helped the customer with the labor on a GM crate motor afterwards

Thanks for all the input. I'm pulling it from Dowdy's and having it towed to 4X4 Off Road and Fabrication. I think I can relax now. Been stressing about it since I got the call on Sunday morning. Again, thank you all.

Yup, that is pretty dang ugly. Have you asked the kiddo yet "what the heck were you doing?"
I'm sorry for the touch situation, but that is honestly a simple fix for an off road shop that is used to regears as a regular part of their business. After I figured out that Dowdy's was a typical auto repair shop their solution made sense. If it's not too late, I'd seriously pony for another tow and get it to one of the off road shops cuz it will save you a few grand.

Did the shop state that the housing was good, and it was just the gears that were toast?
I have paid for two regears for my JK, different ratios as the tire size increased. First one took all of 3 1/2 hours start to finish and cost $800 (High volume/low price kind of situation, lots of JK's going through). Second regear (different state) was $1600 and took about 5 hours. That is both axles, parts/labor, out the door. So yeah, I'll second the previous suggestions that you find a 4x4 shop to rebuild it - if that's an option.
And, you updated as I was typing this. Good call on moving it.

Even if the housing does turn out to be bad, which it should be ok, spending that much it’s good to get a second opinion.
looks like you may be on a better track on getting it fixed up
