Its the oil filter! I started out using mopar filters and was getting dry starts switched to fram extra guard and no more dry starts no matter how cold it gets. I was also told by a service tec to stay away from the filters that you get free with oil that is on sale from auto parts stores.

The filter can be a problem, but it does not explain why so many have problemsd only in the cold without changing the filter.
Anyway, the cold should decrease the amount of drainback as the oil is thicker.

Fram does it on mine as well as the ford motorcraft i just changed from a suggestion on here to make the ticking go away.....it didnt change anything.
