I am using Mobile 5w/20 synthetic and was getting dry starts with both K&N and Mobile 1 filter.. Really frustrating!

Finally after reading some posts here, I switched over to a WIX and no more dry starts. So far the WIX filter cured the problem for me. Even when in the single digits no more dry starts.

I find it funny that people will spend hundreds and thousands on upgrades for their Jeep but heaven forbid they buy something that they can't see working but helps protect their engine. LOL

Oh but I don't need it I have lifetime powertrain , I'll just get the engine replaced! LOL

I wonder when we star to see engines going bad if the manufacturer will pay for the new engine/repairs. But knowing our luck after the warranty empires is when the engine will go.

I agree that some filters have bad and faulty Anti-Drainback Valves I'm also inclined to think it is something else, dealer does all my oil and filters and I,ve had two dry starts with the mopar filters when the engine was new, what worked for me was seafoam ( a carbon cleaner ) added to the oil, ran it for 3K miles until the next oil change, I only did this once, and in the last 25k miles not one dry start and no lifters noise. This brings up two thoughts


1 The design of this type of oil pump ( inner and outer rotor ) tolerance has to be kept to a minimum to be efficient then they mount it on the receiving end of the crank where it has, torsional, vibrational harmonics, and then mount it in a aluminum housing with all its expansion.


2 Engine assembly plant, and how they prep blocks for assembly and what they use. Are they using a substance that can block the bypass or partially block the bypass, who know's

All I can say is that the carbon cleaner worked for me with little to no oil consumption

I too have this issue only in the cold, exactly as explaained, very annoying and certainly not at all good for the engine.

I'm over it, it's definitely the extreme cold. Today it sat over night and was about 36 when I started it and it was smooth.

TRy a NApa Gold filter and maybe adding a quart of synthetic with 5 quarts of regular that did it for me. Slight light tap but not musch at all. Probably will not harm anything for 200,000 miles.

I think it is the starter we are hearing in the sub freezing starts. Maybe the comp senses the temp and amps up the current to the starter.
