Default Valve tap and rough start.

Since it has dropped into the 20s here, when my JK sits over night the morning start sounds very harsh(slight grind sounds) and the lifters or something taps for a second or two.(maybe 3 quick taps and it's gone).

I have a Fram Tough Guard filter and Valvoline synth oil in it and the oil level is fine. Also, it's parked on flat ground.

I've seen some issues with this from others. Do I just have to deal with it on cold mornings?

Any input or discussion is helpful.

Default filter?

I am in need of a solution as well. That is valve tap from the oil running out of the valve train over night. Essentially, ur engine is running with minimal oil in the valvs. I read someplace on here to use a different filter that doesnt allow the oil to seep out. We will wait for our friendly forum members to help us. All in all, it is not good for the engine. I am running manufacturer filter and dealer regular oil. I have that problem bad!

I have been dealing with the same issue. I have been thinking of adding a presureized pre-oiler.

same thing here. sounds awful for about a second and then its fine. I wonder is this a flow problem or a drainage problem? Would a lighter weight oil (0w20) make this problem worse or improve it?

I too have this problem. Only a second or two upon start-up. I have the lifetime powertrain, BUT that doesn't mean I want to use it. I also have a wish-list a mile long that doesn't include a $250+ add-on. I guess I will continue ignoring it unless this post leads to a cheaper solution.

There have been a few discussions on this over time. From my personal experience Mobil oil filters have been shown to have faulty Anti-Drainback Valves (ADB). I installed one then pulled it out 2 days later. I currently run a Bosch.

Are you (all) sure this just came about from cold weather? Are you parking in a garage during winter instead of outside in warmer months? The sounds may have been there all along but you just didn't notice before.

Search on "oil filter" and/or "Anti-Drainback Valves (ADB)". You should find previous discussions. Frams were emntioned specifically but I can't remember if the comments were good or bad.

This is very significant in cold weather and is louder and longer. In warm weather I notice it a little. Mine is kept outside under an awning because I have the Jeep SRT8 in the garage. I have the warranty as well but I really dont wanna use it if i can prevent this.

It's an oil filter problem. A filter with a functional anti-drainback valve will work. There's some popular filters on the market that have lousy drain back valves. Search the forums for Oil Filter or "drainback" and you should find the thread pretty quick that lists them by name.

I have been using the MOPAR oil filters. No start-up noise.
Give it a try. If you still get the noise, it's not the filter. (Or so it would seem.)

I have had the Jeep 2 winters now...I am using a Fram oil filter because of the Mobil 1 filter issues. It DOES NOT do this in warmer weather. It used to (with Mobil 1 filter) before I went to a different filter. Since I started using Fram the issue went away in the Spring-Summer-Fall. Have used Mopar filter...same issue. Now we are talking ZERO degrees F outside at night plus some pretty nasty wind chills. Maybe this is the reason, but it is not a filter issue. Plenty of us solved the filter issue a long time ago.
