Default Trany problom?

Who has had a problom with there trans.
A frind of mine lost his trans today with only 300 miles on it.
When he got it to the dealer they had 4 other Jeep with the same problom.
The trans has drive or revers. It quit going down the freeway.
It is a Rubi and I have one on order and would like to know if there has been other probloms also.
Thanks.

Default Tranny Problem

No problems of any kind here, yet.

I have 1400 on it so far.

Automatic with 4.10 and 33" tires.

I have not heard of any problems with the tranny and it is the same one used in the Liberty since 2002 and the reports I have seen would indicate above average reliability. I had the auto in my Liberty for 3 years and did plenty of towing with no issues whatsoever. It takes a while to learn it because it has its own personality but no problems.

I have heard of a few complaints of loose noise with the manual but I think that is pretty normal.

Let me know if you find out more info...I would be very curious if there were in fact 4 jeeps with issues and would really want to hear more.

The trans. did get changed in the KJ (liberty) in 03. The late 03 and newer KJ's trans. had less compression hold back on steep downhills offroad. The early KJ's would hold about 2.5K rpm on a steep downhill in 4LO ...much like other Jeeps....the later model which I have will freewheel up to 5K in 4 LO...which allows for to much downhill speed. I use the brakes on the KJ downhill where I don't even touch them when driving my ZJ. Those that comment on the later year KJ "not having a problem" don't know the difference between the two (not trying to be mean...just stating a fact. I've driven both transmissions and can speak from experience).

I don't know what the JK has for a transmission however I certainly hope it has better compression braking than my KJ. (I expect that it does).

Hope that helps.

I knew first year KJ's had the 45, not the 42 but I was thinking that change occured in 02...you are probably right and it was 03.

There is no doubt the 45 was a more robust, heavier tranny. I had the 42 in mine however and I have not heard of any reliability concerns after the change.

The Wrangler does have the 42.

The transmission is the 42RLE. The same as the TJ since '03 or '04. I had this transmission in my '04 Rubicon. Worked great offroad with no problems.

I would believe the November 18th TSB to reflash the computer might have something to do with transmission problems. One of the things it fixed was shift quality.
