Tire/wheel questions from a cheapskate
#11
I bought my Unlimited X yesterday. It had the same wimpy tires. Today I had LT 265/75-16 tires put on. I bought Uniroyal Liberator AT tires from Wally World for $110 each. These are the light truck load range E tires. I've killed a lot of P rated tires in the Nevada desert over the years. I'm hoping the LT tires will hold up better.
Decent price. My Jeep looks much better and there was little impact on drivability.
I'll post a pic tomorrow.

I would do the Duelers.... If your not going to be 4x4n' a whole lot... these look better and you can probably find someone here, to sell you them, cheap.
Try local. Shipping is lame.

Here is my Unlimited before new tires.
And here are a couple after.
I went with the 265s (32") for a couple of reasons. I didn't want to take a big hit in drivability with the stock 3:73 axle ratio. I wanted to stay with the stock wheels and no spacers and did not want fittment or rubbing issues.
The only other mod I have planned is a 2"BB to to help keep my belly from dragging. I'm researching the different ones available.
This Jeep will literally spend half it's life in the Nevada desert so for me it reliablility and function over looks.
So far I'm pleased. This thing only has 350 miles on it and over half that has been off road.

axle ratio??
hello, just following up on my original inquiry...
I still may go with just the upgraded tires on the original 16" steelies, or if I can, I might pickup some used 17" alloys and then upgrade the tires.
I admit that I do not know squat about gear ratios, etc. I did not even give this a thought when I purchased my stock X. I was just looking over the window sticker, and I noticed that it mentions Customer Preferred Package C.
I obviously knew I was getting an automatic, but it also mentions a 4.10 axle ratio, whereas under Standard Equipment it lists a 3.21 axle ratio.
I guess my question is this: are you guys running the 265/75/16s, 285/75/16, and upgraded 17s on automatics with the 4.10 gear ratio, and is there any chance that tires and wheels of this size will cause mechanical issues.

Your tire plan was the same as mine. Buying the 265/75-16 tires was the fastest way to put decent tires on this thing without spending a lot of money or modifications.
As far as axle ratios go if you have 4.10 listed under options then that is a good thing. I have the 3.73 ratio and put on 265/75-16 tires. They fit with no issues. The only thing I had to do was re-program the computer for the bigger tire to correct my speedometer and odometer.
