They have changed the upper steering shaft in the 2011's
Was at the dealer for an oil change today and decided to take a look under the hood of a 2011 to see if they changed anything..
Well, they changed the bushing in the upper steering shaft at the firewall. Wonder if it's due to loose/clunky steering complaints?
In the pics you can see the new bushing has bolts actually going through the firewall now and some metal piece around it. Also the plastic sleeve that sticks out no longer has a lip on the end.
The 2011 is the red jeep and the green one is my 2008...

The metal retainer you see on the red JK is also present on yours. It's just the flange is on the other side of the fire wall. Right above yours, you can see the round end of the stud, the threaded end being on the inside of the fire wall.

It appears that they switched from a set scew design (older) to a clinch style design (newer). Have you ever wondered why you would go out wheeling hard core and come out to the street and your wheel was off a bit, but your alignment was still good, it was just that your wheel was off a bit?
The set screw style actually crushed the tube so it could move just a little bit. With the new style clinch design, this should be much less likely to happen..
Hopefully that is what they did! That would be a good move on Jeeps part!
