There is absolutely nothing wrong with synthetic. It won't hurt a thing.
I'd use 5w-30 for the cold starts. I ran a number of oil analysis reports from Blackstone Labs on my used oil and found that Royal Purple was second only to Rotella T6 5w-40.

Been using RP 5W-30 since break in and was so impressed with the difference that i'm now changing all my fluids to synthetic... Cold Canadian mornings require it i'd say...

Been using synthetic since new, no oil-related problems.
BTW, Castrol's website has a place where you can sign up for a 300,000 mile warranty on all lubricated engine parts, at no cost. All you have to do is use their synthetic oil (keep your receipts) and change it every 4000 miles. Don't know if this warranty has been tested by anyone yet, but it's free and it's nice to know it's there.

I just did my first full synthetic swap over at 20,000km to Mobil 1 5w20 on my 2011 JKU Rubi. engine runs noticeably smoother and quieter. I also did an injector cleaning that may/may not have helped (It was free, and probably not needed..oh well)

Synthetic oil thoughts
We usually keep my wife's cars from 3 to 4 years the last 4 cars were Jaguar, Mercedes, Lexus and back to Jaguar. These cars all except the Lexus were on 1 year OCI's on synthetic oil, none were ever back to a dealer or shop for any problems. I don't know if this proves anything other then we are lucky. My Jeep runs on Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 synthetic and I don't expect any lubrication related problems with it either.
