30" wheels are going to look small on your JK. You can go 33" without a lift & the stock tires are 32"
Tire Rack has General AT2's in the following sizes
235 80 r 17
245 70 r 17
255 65 r 17
255 70 r 17
265 65 r 17
265 70 r 17
I was looking at General AT2's in 16" but now I think I'm going for Firestone Destination M/T s in 245-75-16.
They look good and are about 30" in diameter. They should look good on my unlifted 2 dr
Here is a photo. You may want to check these out in 17"

I can reconfirm that the stock tires aren't great in mud, since yesterday the Jeep got real muddy (but it was a lot of fun) and was almost stuck a couple of times.
I'll probably go with a good all terrain tire, but if I could find some Rubicon takeoffs that would be hard to pass up.
Thanks everyone for all the info.

Right now I have 225-75-16 Wranglers. So anything I put on will look bigger.
I see these Firestones that I want come in a 235-85-16. Specs say the tire diameter is 32". I know this is a narrower tire (by about 1/2") but I may consider it if 32" tires will fit with no rub issues.
Thanks for the input. Can you confirm the 32 & 33 diameters as OK?

I asked about this on the forum before and was told 31" was it.

Oh, and 265/75R16's are equivalent to 32x10.50's.

stock Rubi's (32") will not rub if you zip tie your sway bar in a neutral position.
do not zip tie it up or the passenger side may rub under compression and turning left. I ruined a link boot doing that.

After patiently waiting for my stock tires to loose enough tread to self-justify a mud-tire purchase, I went with the Firestone Destination M/Ts 285/75/16 on my stock rims (working on getting new rims, one thing at a time...). Work great without a lift barring a bit of rubbing on full extension, and will likely not be ideal for heavy off road without a 2" lift or so (coming next). So, if you get a bit smaller size, shouldn't have any problems. Love the tires so far!!

I'm still undecided on what to get. Definately the Firestones but I'm mulling over three sizes.
235-85-16 = 32" dia, rim width range 6" to 7", tread width is 6.9", wt = 48lbs
245-75-16 = 30.7" dia, rim width range 6.5" to 7.5", tread width is 7.6", wt = 48lbs
265-75-16 = for some reason there are no dia or rim dimensions on the chart on the Tire Rack website, wt = 54lbs
285-75-16 need a 7.5' to 9" rim width. I only have 7" rims. And are 33.1" according to the chart. Tread width is 8.9 inches. Wt = 60lbs
There doesn't seem to be any 255-75-16's available.
I am leaning toward the 245's for a couple of reasons.
Cost is a big factor right now. I've been quoted the these tires for $203.00 each mounted and balanced from Mr Tire and if I go with Tire Rack I can save over that because I know a guy who will mount and balance them for me for $40.00 + tax. Tire Rack pisses me off, though, because they want $83.00 to ship four tires less than 30 miles and won't allow me to pick them up at the warehouse.
My second reason for the 245's is the slighly smaller lighter tire shouldn't affect my gas MPG as much as a larger heaver tire.
Considering the type of wheeling I do They should be adequate.
The 235-85-16's are a consideration because they are 32" tires. But the 6.9" tread width is a concern. But then the old military Jeeps had narrow tires and did all right.
I'm open to all comments and opinions.

I had 245/75/16 as stock, which comes out to almost 31" (well, 30.5" to be precise), the 225 would be just over 29" in that same ratio...here's a great way to compare tire sizes, it's a graphic size calculator (oh, bee-have!):
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
Might help you in comparing/contrasting different styles/sizes/etc.
I think you'll do great with the 245's for just the reasons you said...and in any case, just having a Mud tire will help...remember, though, they are a bit louder on the highway, although it lets you know you're in a Jeep!!
