Stock Tires Comment/Question
I just recently bought an '08 (new) X Unlimited. So far I really love it. Just to try it out its offroad ability a little bit my wife and I went to some local strip pits where there are several offroad trails. While the Jeep did good overall, I was disappointed with its ability in the mud. Not deep mud by any means either. I was able to get stuck for just a minute on flat ground. I put it in 4 Lo and rocked it back and forth and got out of it.
The problem is that my old Toyota 4 x 4 made it through the exact same spot without any trouble. So, I think it's the tires.
Mine has the 17" wheels with the Goodyear Wrangler SRAs. Are these known to be poor tires for mud? I'm not impressed with them so far (at least I hope they're the cause). My pickup has General Grabber ATs which I think are really good tires and probably why the Toyota seems a little better in the mud.
Any recommendations for tires for the stock wheels? They don't make the General Grabbers in that size unfortunately for me since I can get Generals or Continentals at about half price from the tirerack website.
I've also thought about getting 16" wheels since that seems to open up more choices for tires.
Other than that we love it.

Try these
Try these they would fit your stock wheels and offer a slight increase in tire size. Also, much better in the mud. TOYO Open Country MT LT265 70R17

Look at all the "tire threads" for your answer. I have a Sahara with stock Duelers and have been doing the "what tire to buy game" and the answers are deep and wide. You have many considerations, but the neat thing is you can gain not only traction, but some height with your tire decision. You can look at an aggressive AT which would likely do the trick and gain a couple of inches by going to a 32 or 33" tire with no lift at all if you keep the width down.
You can probably find a set of take-off Rubicon tires and get some nice 32" Mud Terrains that would be fantastic in the mud.
Really your wallet's call. Definately grab some height though since you are upscaling anyway.

I agree with the others. I still have the SR-As on SARA but fully intend to put the BFG KM2s on when these are worn out. They work fine for light-duty trail running with no mud but are a pitifull excuse for an off-road tire with even a small amount of mud involved. I simply figured I could live with them until they wore out. Take care... Mike

The stock tires are terrible. Any mud tire will work exponentially better.
But if you do mostly street driving, go for a good AT (all-terrain). They are not nearly as good as a real mud tire, but still way better than stock. And they ride better on the HWY.
I went middle of the road and got Cooper S/T's. They are a cross between an AT and an MT.

The MT's from someone's Rubi that is upgrading is probably the best deal for the money. I paid around $500 for a full set, including the rims. Now I swap them on when I'm going to the ORV park.
With the MT's I couldn't get stuck in the mud pit (Not too deep) at the park when I dropped down to 2WD. It wasn't even "fun" in 4WD.

They look good and are about 30" in diameter. They should look good on my unlifted 2 dr
