Stock JK Height -- more than enough, or not quite for Overlanding

For driving down a dirt road the stock suspension is more then capable, like others have said stock tires and the added weight you are going to carry is the issue. If you can figure the amount of weight you are going to carry you can size the coils or you might look into air bags to handle the extra weight.
Throwing on a tall or HD lift to handle weight will work but when you are not loaded down you are going to sit high and have a rougher ride. You could also look at products like the JKS ACOS that is an adjustable coil over spacer that will allow you to adjust the suspension height for those heavy trips and return it back down for everyday driving without having to swap out other suspension parts. 33" or 35" tires are more then sufficient and 37's are a complete overkill but look good. Gas mileage may be the deciding factor there.
The only things to compare to those other vehicles are the ground clearance and approach angles, the suspension is really a non factor. The wheelbase and track width will also affect how a vehicle will perform off road.
