The jack is extended slightly in the storage compartment to hold it firmly in place. You should be able to give it a few turns to the left (I think) to "lower" it and release it.

This is one of the "gotcha's" on the JK. The others are the over-sized cupholder, and the rear overhead light. Trust me, most of us have learned from this site the answer to at least one, if not all, of these.

ROTFL!

All you have to do is retract the Jack by twisting the knob. It is sooooo easy and the nice part is that when you reinstall it you can tighten it enough so it never rattles, ever.

I had this little dilemma briefly with my TJ, fortunately that experience served me well when I went to take out the JK jack. The manual should state it explicitly though to prevent frustration.

Default Ya no kidding!

as I was fighting with it in front of my house, all I could think about was what if this was on the side of the highway? I'd be fuming!

Default You win.

Your story is much better then getting pissed off drinking beer in the front yard scratching my head.
