Standard key waterproof?
I have a base 2012 JK that I have made a few changes to. But it has the basic set of two keys, metal and plastic. I understand the keys have a chip in them. At the beach, I like to keep the key in my surf trunks. Is the chip sealed inside the plastic casing, or can salt water get in there?

The key below? I've had mine in plenty of water without any issues and (as you'll see), they're cheap to replace as long as you have at least 2 keys already.

Send them into liquipel in Irvine, CA. They can waterproof just about any electronic. I have a few things treated. I can put my phone in a glass of water and it still works.

Just to be clear, the key I have is a metal key with a rubberized plastic cover that appears to be molded onto the key. There are no buttons. But I know there is a chip inside.

You're talking the non remote key right? The grey one? I'd think that they were pretty safe, but to be safe, just get a metal blank cut, and keep that one in your trunks. It won't start your jeep, but it'll open the doors.

I unintentionally took my remote key swimming in the ocean less than two months after I bought my '09. I was in the chest deep water for almost an hour. All buttons still work to this day with no problems. I'm sure your non-remote key would be fine.
