Rusted Diff. Covers?? is this Normal?

Rear diff cover rusting
I've got a stock rubi and was checking my undercarriage the other day and the rear diff. cover has some issues. It appears theres a thin coating on it? maybe paint? Either way this material has oxidized or something and is flaking off. The exposed metal underneath is rusting. Keep in mind I live in Tucson Arizona so rust of any kind is rare down here. Any thoughts on this? The only thing I can think of is maybe the diff oil is low and the gears are overheating but I havent had a chance to check the fluid levels yet. Thanks for your input -Jason

Surface rust on diff or cover is normal. Next time a 3/4 or 1T 4x4 goes by, look at the back diff. You will see rust. Unless it is pitting, or you simply don't like it, it is not a problem. You can always repaint, the outside, when you pull the cover to changing your diff fluid.

Mine is doing the same thing. I was a bit surprised given that I know I haven't hit that spot (and the paint is just flaking off, so it's clearly not from an impact). I realize I can use the rattle can and that it's just surface rust, but I still hate to see that on a less than 6 month old vehicle. I plan to raise this with my dealer to see if they will replace it or at least repaint it. Not a big deal as I plan to replace mine w/aftermarket covers at some point, but I'd like my original covers to be in as good of condition as possible for resale.
Oh, and kudos to tgrt for offering to ship his old covers to the OP for free!

hey thanks for the help, i'm glad i'm not the only one even though its too bad for both of us hah. I'll talk to the dealer but as long as the structural integrity isint compromised that much i'll probably just paint it to keep it from spreading.

Mine too. I think it`s odd that a 3 month old vehicle`s pumpkin has a crappy rattle can type paint job on it that has totally flaked off. I wonder how old my axels are? Does anyone know if they have a born on date stamped onto them?
