Unhappy Rubicon Help with Differential?

I have a Stock Rubicon and was changing the differential oil yesterday and I don't think I have a D44 on the front. The reason for this is that the fluid capacities sheet that I have says that a front D44 takes 1.35 qts and I could only get in 1 qt. That is the amount that a D30 takes. I also noticed that the shafts coming from my hogs head were significantly smaller than the ones on the rear. Do all Rubicons come with front and rear D44's because if so then I got hosed?

By the way this forum is the best thing since sliced bread.

best way for us to help is to take a picture and post it of your front axle

BUT the shape of the diffs should be the same if both are D44

I will as soon as I get a chance today. So it is possible for a Rubicon to have D30's underneath it.

According to the service manual these are the capacities:

FRONT AXLE ± .03 L (1 oz.)

186 FBI (Model 30)
1.0 L (2.1 Pints)

216 RBI (Model 44)
1.3 L (2.7 Pints)

REAR AXLE ± .03 L (1 oz.)

198 RBI (Model 35)
1.83 L (3.8 Pints)

226 RBI (Model 44)
2.25 L (4.75 Pints)*

When I did mine I thought the same thing as you but then I noticed they are shown in leters not quarts.

When i said 1qt i meant one jug of the lucas 80W-90 which is 32oz or 1 liter. Sorry i didn't get the units right. Its still early monday. Either way if i had 44's then i should have been able to put more than that in because oil started coming out of the hole at one liter or 32oz.

Damn if it ain't early Monday.

All kinds of considerations. Was your JK jacked up? Does it have a lift? Were you on level ground? If you look at it, the difference is about 1/2 pint which isn't all that much. If there is/was any kind of tilt to the diff when you were filling it, that could account for the difference. However, do post us some picts of the front of your diff. I'm pretty sure Rubi's only come with 44's up front and if you really do have a 30, you just spent a bunch-o-money for a couple of hood Rubicon stickers.
