Default Rough starting, smoke (2x's) then fine so far.

Yesterday backed the Jeep out of garage. Ran fine. Weather low 40's. Sat about 10 hours. Started up and ran rough and smelled some weird exhaust. Pulled into garage. didn't think much about it until today. Sarted same way this AM, bunch of smoke, idled like crud, still smoke while I backed out of the drive (not as bad). A bit of a rough idle for a mile or so then fine.

Any ideas. 52,000 miles. Good gas (I think, Mobile and Shell). Could it be the transition of the reformulated gas or ???? Never happened before.

I don't think it's the gas. It could be the sensor for the idle going bad. Once the engine warmed up a bit it sounds like it was fine. You should check to see if there are any codes. The smoke and odor was probably from running too rich on start up. You can't rule out a bad O2 sensor(s) either.

Yea I would check 02 sensors first.
1) what is is idling at (RPM)
2) oil level?
3)prior problems? Burn any oil?
4) color / smell of smoke?

Let us know.

Kinda chugged but idle was fine.
Oil fine (I do burn it at the Chrysler "accepted" rate of a quart every 1000 miles) I keep it topped up.
No prior problems
Didn't get out to check but saw the smoke come around front. seemed dark gray. Smelled like unburned gas.
No codes came up.

The Jeep is going to sit for a couple days again so I'll keep you posted.

Accepted rate of 1 quart every 1000 miles?!!! WTF??

So every 5000 miles you just change the filter & keep adding oil or what??

What weight oil are you running? Please tell me its not 5w20...

Ummm....because he's burning a quart every 1000 miles......

If he is still using 5w20, he should switch to a heavier weight.

The only thing you will see increases in by using 5w20 weight oil, is engine wear & oil consumption.

Sorry Uneasy, I put the accepted into quotes to indicate sarcasm. I have been watching on the forum for info concerning this and i see that many have been told it is accepted. I was 3 weeks away from lifttime drivetrain (bought 7/3, liftetime started 7/26) so I was out of warranty in 2.5 years due to mileage. I didn't start burning oil until about 42,000. The faster I run the more I burn. I upped it to 5W30 and it helped a little and then I just changed recently and went to 10W30 and it seems to be a bit better but no long trips recently. I just top it up every couple tank fulls. I'm bummed as I have a friend who has a speed shop and was thinking of putting a supercharger on but not if I'm pushing oil.
