Default rear brakes.....

my '14 JKU Sahara - would you replace brakes at 70% left?

Last week, my mechanic told me it is about time to replace the pads and rotors stating it will not pass inspection in May.

Today was at dealership for radiator and 430N - both new replacements and my jeep got the multipoint inspection...and they say rears are 70% remaining.

thoughts.....I am replacing the factory tires, I have 73K on jeep and all four tires are at 10/32 left.

Brake pads are good until you hear the Metal scraping sound which is closer to <25% left. Pads don't perform any better with 70% left than they do with 25% left. I'm not sure what the mechanic is trying to say, it makes no sense to me. Ask him to explain why a pad with 70% of pad left will not pass an inspection and what type of inspection do you have to pass for brakes?

A buddy took his Silverado to the dealership for oil changes & their "inspection" for 5 years. Told him the brakes were good each time. He finally went to another shop & they told him he had no brakes left. The retainer clips were still on the rear drums indicating they never looked at them.

With your mileage I don't think you're at 70% pad life. Especially the way the JK eats rear pads.

Just did brakes front and rear on my 2012 JKU with 70,000 miles. Original brakes. Back brakes were toast. Fronts could have gone another 10-20k more miles. Here is a picture of the rear.

That's definitely true. I just saw he said 73K miles as well. The mechanic likely said 70% worn which would make a lot more sense.
