These tires have "sipping" which is specifically designed for that purpose. In addition to that it is also designed for stud installation. This is where the Duratracs kill the Nitto Grapplers. Not a dedicated snow tire but very capable if needed.

so I guess you and the other suggest that if I go with these and they are not exact stock size I will need to install spacers to make up for the wider tire?

You have another option... Sell your wheels or keep them as a backup and just order a tire wheel package. Just make sure the backspacing on the wheel is -4.5 or so. This will push the wheel out further and there is no need for spacers. You can get up to 33's with no lift this way too. Both options will work just fine it just depends on personal tastes on wanting to keep the stock rims or not

I have some corrosion on my current wheels and scratches so not sure what I will get for them...pretty sure a tire/wheel package will be more than i want to spend so if I have my heart set on these I will have to price out someone who can install the spacers for me..

Thanks for your replies by the way!

The height is not shorter, it is actually slightly taller. The second number is a ratio of the width so even though it is lower, the tire is wider. So, the tire height is as follows:

1. Stock 255/70R18:
height(rim edge to tire edge) = (255mm x .70)/25.4mm per inch = 7.02"
width = 10.03"

2. 275/60R18:
height = (275 x 0.65)/25.4 = 7.03"
width = 10.83"

would I then be able to get away without having to buy spacers if I was to put on 275/65's instread of the 70's? Is it the width that dictates whether or not spacers are needed? Another poster says they were good with 65's and same height as stock. If I calcuate:

255/70/18=32.05
275/65/18=32.07

I do not want to compromise safety so no fooling around for me...

I went thru the same thing, and decided on new wheels- here's why.

New set of wheels ~$500.

OR
4 spacers ~200
paying local shop to put new tires on old wheel ~60
total price $260

So new wheels end up costing only $240 more- seemed like a no-brainer to me.

BTW I went with 305/70's with 16" wheels that have 4.75" backspacing. My Jeep came with 17" wheels, but going to 16" saved me $200.

seen some Jeeps with some cool wheels, not sure what brand...again I am budgeting myself here so either I buy stock like a BFG Rugged Terrain A/T or I price out spacers with the Duratrac's...

Cost...Rough Country 1.5" Spacers w/ forum discount was about $120.00ish. Spacer installation was free as I just asked the tire place to throw them on before putting my wheels on the Jeep. Total cost per wheel $290 (tire w/ install & balance) + $30 (spacer purchase)
