Default Question on front differentail fluid change.

I just changed the fluid of my front differential and it took almost quart to fill up. Is this normal? I mean I did not even use the whole bottle, there was some left. Anyway the way I did it was as I was filling it it started to ooze out a little and thats when you are suppose to stop right?
Any info would be great cuz tomorrow I start school and I dont what to damage anything.
Oh and why does the old oil smell really awful? It smells like diarrhea!

Here are the factory differential capacities for the JK:

FRONT AXLE ± .03 L (1 oz.)
186 FBI (Model 30) 1.0 L (1.05 qts)
216 FBI (Model 44) 1.3 L (1.35 qts)

REAR AXLE ± .03 L (1 oz.)
198 RBI (Model 35) 1.83 L (1.9 qts)
226 RBI (Model 44) 2.25 L (2.4 qts)

Actual amounts from factory on my vehicle:
Front Dana 44: 44oz (15oz above bottom of fill hole) (1.4 qts)
Rear Dana 44: 72oz (slightly above bottom of fill hole) (2.25 qts)

Why does the rear D44 hold more oil than the front D44?

Because in the front you are only filling the center section, while in the rear to oil goes down the tubes too.
