possible problems with some 3.6 pentastar engines

Dropped it off at dealer this morning (again!) for the head replacement. They said should be ready by Friday, we'll see how it goes...10500 miles on the odometer, the ticking started at around 6500 miles so I already put 4000 miles on it while haggling it out with Chrysler, not really dealers fault they have been sincere for the most part.
I also have experienced loss of power on acceleration at low speed / RPMs and knocking/ pinging which I hope improves after the head replacement.

Add me to the list...
Been following for a while and finally joined for this thread. Thanks for all the resources and documentation here! Was getting the CEL intermittently over the last 6 wks. Upon last oil change (Monday), I got this back from the service tech: "Code P0306 Cylinder 6 misfire. Cyl. 6 has 110psi compression, but 60% leakdown." He said it was a faulty exhaust valve seat, and the head will need to be replaced. Heads are back-ordered for a couple MONTHS! Build date 8/11, picked up in 11/11, 11,500 on the clock.

Spoke to my SVC manager at my Nissan store who used to work for a jeep store for years had him call his friend at the jeep store and explain the situation. Said friend stated " that's a problem with the grand Cherokees not the wranglers because the motors come from a different plant than the one they were having the problems with" I said BS showed him this thread and the you tube videos. He called his friend back. Long story short my replacement head is on order. 6300 on the odom. At time of order will let you all know how it goes. Don't lay down for the it's normal or that's only a problem with the grand Cherokee bs. If you can tell that there is a definite tapping on the drivers side and and not the passenger side march yourself down to the local dealer and get it ordered. Now that I think back I started hearing the tapping sound at about 2500 miles on the odom.

Dropped mine off today. Definite ticking on driver side. They tried to tell me it was NORMAL. One tech said it was my injectors. Then when I mentioned all the problems that people were having. They acknowledged they had heard of the problem. They said it had something to do with a bolt being too long on the valve cover which is restricting oil flow and causing the lifter to be noisy. They said that they will tear it apart and inspect, but they can't replace the head until the engine starts throwing codes. They will try replacing the lifters before replacing the head. If the lifters are still starved of oil it's only going to happen again!
Gotta love red tape!! I guess I'll just wait to see how many lifters they'll put in it before they do it right and replace the head.

How do you know if the jeep is throwing codes?is there a way to see them before going to the dealer? After the dealer told me it was normal I got a few more opinion from non Chrysler techs and they said the same, so I was ready to let it go but now my jeep hesitates in 1, 2, and 3rd gear and yesterday it backfired on me.

If you get the MIL light on, just turn the key off and on 3 times quickly without actually starting the engine, ending on the on position, look for displayed code in the odometer, if it ends with dashes, "--------" no codes present otherwise you will see "P*****" with numbers present, if you see P300 or similar you have cylinder misfiring issues

I did not wait for codes to be shown on my Jeep, I just got Chrysler involved based on the research I did in all the forums; if you hear ticking consistently something is wrong.
They flashed my computer, replaced all the lifters, and finally doing the head as I speak.
