possible problems with some 3.6 pentastar engines

How do you find out if your jeep is tagged " Restricted"? My 2012 JKUR with a build date of 3/12 and 2500 km has had a noticeable tic since 1200km. thought it was nothing, but it's getting louder. And after reading this I think I should head to the dealer, which sucks because I haven't had much luck with the dealers in the past with my 08 3.8 oil sucker that I traded for this one hoping to rid rid of the bullshit.

Good luck with your dealer. I would go back to the dealer you bought it from. They know about the problem and with a 5 year warranty it should be corrected.

The problem is always a failed hydraulic lifter; one or more. Also Chrysler always requests all the lifter bores to be measured on your head.

The reason for the restriction is that Chrysler, and only Chrysler, makes the decision to what exactly it will authorize the dealer to do to your vehicle concerning the head. This is based on all of the info the dealer provides after the head disassembly and observations.

"Restricted Status" is based on your VIN. Which means they have a very good idea where ALL the faulty heads are and in whose Jeep. When your Jeep is under Restricted Status, your dealer should disassemble your head to understand what your specific problem is.

There's two ways to find out how bad yours is; have a dealer diagnose it or take a chance and continue to drive it. I would think the CEL would come on over time. How much time for this to happen is anybody's guess.
The difficulty in monitoring your Jeep's performance is because this problem is happening with very low miles. The vehicle is just coming out of its initial break-in period, so you have no feel for how good it should be running. Before a thousand miles or so my Jeep lacked a lot of power. After that it improved quite a bit, but it still didn't get to the performance level that it should have reached because of this lifter problem. I had no way of knowing my Jeep's performance potential because this problem was hindering it and I didn't have the faintest clue. As I said in my third sentence above the performance improved substantially after the head was replaced. This says only one thing; it's causing more problems than just an engine tic. it isn't severe enough to cause a CEL condition; I chose not to wait and let it leave me with a bigger problem.
As I've stated many times on this forum; a hydraulic lifter system should not tic. Maybe at 200k worn out miles; but not at 3500. You could be setting yourself up to have a break down on an interstate highway; the last place you want to have this to happen.

Just stopped at the dealer, mechanic came out listened and wants to take it in overnight to check it out, see if the tic is different in the morning. He defenitly thinks something is wrong. I never said anything about what I've learned here as I want him to make his own conclusion first. He did go and check the bulletins and came back saying there weren't any.
I will post my progress, wish me luck.
Is there anywhere saying that having to do a major repair on a vehicle not even 30 days after purchase warrants a buy back?

I guarantee, Chrysler won't allow this to fall into a buy back status... the ticking alone won't prompt them to take your Jeep out of service - but throwing a CEL will, which is tangible evidence there's a problem.
Good luck with it, the very reason I hesitate to buy another Jeep.
