Actually he did go out of his way. I will send you the work order so you may see what STAR said to replace and what he said he did. The tech was "TOLD" to replace the suspect lifter and not lifters. Now dont get me wrong and I am not arguing, just stating what was written in the work order.

I personally have known this tech for years and have never known him to lie or exaggerate. STAR originally wanted to just replace the lifters and he said that would not fix the issue and he personally chose to measure the bores to prove his point to STAR to avoid anymore down time for me or having to come back again for an issue not fixed right the first time.

This tech kicks butt and treats every vehicle like it is own.

Ohhh not to mention, I do not always believe everything the service advisors or managers say. LOL I am not saying they do not know what they are talking about, but they personally do not work on the vehicles. I have even been told something before by one of the advisors at the dealership that was not exactly what the Tech said he did. LOL

i just noticed my engine ticking today. I had not even seen this post when i noticed it and decided to do some research. My jeep was built 4/12 and has 1200 miles on it.. I was messing around in the yard in 4lo and noticed what sounded like an exhaust leak... with further inspection, sounded like it was coming from the driver's side head.... I'm not very happy about this and will drive it on a 700 mile round trip this weekend. If it doesn't get better, or gets any worse.. i will be headed to the dealership next week. Sucks!!

Thanks for the info. It's interesting how Chrysler treats various people and dealers differently. You would think they would do the same thing for this problem for everybody. Maybe it comes down to who the actual Chrysler case officer, or whatever they're called, is in charge of your problem. Like they say everybody is different or maybe they're getting kickbacks if they save Chrysler a few extra bucks instead of doing it 100% correctly.

About 1,000 miles off from my 2nd oil change and I've been hearing ticking for awhile. I'll let it idle and open the hood and I can hear it clearly. I didn't think much of it until I saw this. And more recently a handful of times I'll accelerate and then begin to shift and I hear a "thud" almost as if a cylinder has dropped???

I'll be having the dealer take a look when I have it in next.

A hydraulic valve train should have absolutely no ticking. If you hear any no matter how minute; this is not normal and should be addressed.

Mine began fairly quietly where I could only hear it when I opened the hood. As the miles built up I could hear it just by getting out of the vehicle. At this point I still couldn't hear it while driving or stopped at a light.

Another thing I realized; a friend owns a new JKU Sport; it doesn't have the sound absorbing foam under the hood. I have a Rubicon which has the foam; this makes a big difference.

Update:

Dealer just called and said they ordered a set of replacement lifters to be overnighted and replaced tomorrow....

Based on others experiences this may not fix the problem and may be following STAR recommendations, so onward we go!!!

so have all these problems only been limited to the ones built between august and december of last year, or does it also affect ones built in 2012?

OK this is my first post but I am a long time jeep guy. I bought my 2012 JK used a week ago with 15K. I bought it from a dealership my father-in-law retired from a few years back as service and parts Director. He made some phone calls to see if anything had ever been done warranty wise to the jeep and nothing had been done, but it had a (restriction) on the heads. He contacted a buddy in Detroit and it means if there is any issues with the heads, the dealership has to contact Chrysler prior to doing any work. My production date is 08/11. Apparently it's never had a problem but it has been flagged? I did buy it with certified pre-owned warranty which extended beyond the new warranty so I am not concerned. I do hear a slight ticking while idling but nothing I am concerned with as of now.

Did you read my previous post? A hydraulic valve train is designed to have absolutely no noise; which means no ticking at all. The fact that your vehicle has been flagged as "Restricted" means Chrysler knows your cylinder head will have problems and will need to be replaced. This is exactly what I'm going through right now with my vehicle being tagged as "Restricted".

The fact that you have first hand connections with the dealer you purchased it from will be a significant blessing. Have your father-in-law contact the dealer and tell them to order you a head ASAP. Let me guess it's the driver's side head.

The fact that your Jeep has 15k on it for miles, and the majority of every case I've read about has had problems from as early as 1500 miles; says your newly purchased used Jeep is very much ready for a head replacement. If it was me I would be at the dealer yesterday with the complaint. What did I say in my second sentence above? You're getting significant wear on your engine it was not designed for. I know for a fact Chrysler is not replacing cams with this head replacement issue. You might be okay but I wouldn't want to find out 4-1/2 years from this date your cams are overly worn because of this head issue. You have an engine warranty, use it; what are you waiting for?
