One reason the X versions get better mileage is due to the tires. Consumer Reports tested many AT type tires and discovered that the Goodyear SR-As had far lower rolling resistance than any other tire in the test. So much lower that their test truck averaged about 2.4 mpg more than they saw for the next best tire. That was 10% better.

Of course, your Rubicon's 4.10 gears contributes to reduced fuel mileage as well.

My mileage was helped by having a hardtop, the windows closed and the A/C off. If it was summer, with the top and doors off, I'd be getting about 18 mpg too.

My regards,

Widewing

I am the same...around town and commuting to work I am averaging 17.5. But I took a trip to OBX and got 22 on the five hours on US95 averaging about 65 MPH on cruise control.

Been averaging 17.9 hand-calculated (17.2 dashboard)...ran as high as 21.6 on a 700 mile Interstate drive in September using Cruise Control...have 22,000 miles...check the tires every week, especially in the Fall and Winter for underinflation...I do a lot of off-roading hunting and fishing, which drops my mileage down...also the 4.10 doesn't help...but as others have said, if you want gas mileage get a Prius...just don't try to haul 4 dozen goose decoys down thru the swamp with it...

Do you have any type of link to that? I would like to read it. I don't get Consumer Reports.

I calculated mine and I have NEVER gotten better than 16 mpg in the city. I recently took a trip from Baton Rouge, LA to Gulf Shores, AL about 270 miles and was getting 22.7 mpg with the cruse set on 70. Thats on a stock x24s 2dr

I like consumer reports, but unfortunately even if you subscribe to the magazine if you want to get anything online you have to subscribe online and pay the online fee as well. PITA I know

You must have an online subscription to CR to read the actual article, but you can read a summary of it here: http://motorage.search-autoparts.com...tegoryId=43145

"To show how rolling resistance affects gas mileage, CR used the Chevrolet Silverado test truck to measure the highway fuel economy of the tires with the best and worst rolling resistance. The Silverado got 2.4 mpg better highway mileage with the Goodyear Wrangler SR-A all-season tire (with the lowest rolling resistance) than with the General Grabber AT 2 all-terrain tire (with the highest rolling resistance). That is a difference of about $300 per year, assuming gas costs $4 a gallon and the car is driven 12,000 miles per year."

My regards,

Widewing
