Default Plugging axle

Hey guys, I just tried to replace the u joint on my passenger axle shaft and found out the cap hole on the inner shaft had been mushed and shaped into an oval so that the new cap will not fit. Seeing as how I don't have another shaft, I plugged the axle tube with a rag and bolted everything back up. Is this all I need to do to drive it safely? Do I need to remove the front driveshaft?

I am leaving wednesday for about a 500 mile road trip and need to know if this situation is ok and safe. Thanks

If I remember correctly the weight is taken wholly by the wheel bearing, so OK with no axle shafts.

Don't quote me on that, hopefully someone else will chime in soon.
