Penstar recall
#21
Another forum member, Gort, is trying to gather the info about the build dates of the engines. He contacted me about including the info on my spreadsheet. I think it's a good idea, but most people haven't looked into that (including me).

Well, last week I had the "Check Engine" light come on, and when they hooked it up to read what code it was throwing, it was "Cylinder 2 Mis-fire". They cleared it and I drove most of that day before it returned. Took it back in today and they did a "Software Update" based on a TSB they'd received, and cleared it again. Hadn't driven 50 miles before the check engine light came on again.
So, I figure that, along with the ticking noise, means I'll be up for this as well.

I guess that's some important information Chrysler left out.

With the combination of the tick and the light, they should be replacing your head now. Make sure they use the rebuilt heads; the part number ends in "AB". The original heads are part "AA".

It seems you can't really find the part number easily. You can only find the Engine build date somewhere on the engine.
As for the part itself, most people realized there was a difference with the serial number once they looked at the work order when their head was replaced.
Unless someone has found out a way to find it...?

I was told that the original head was only marked by a tag which was removed prior to the engine assembly in the factory. Anyone who's JK was built prior to July should just assume that they (and I) have the "AA" head. All dealerships should now have the new "AB" head. But, definitely check before the new head is installed. The dealership has to have a part number before they install a part, because it is on the invoice when they print it out.
I have been contacted by two JK owners have had the original head replaced with the old "AA" head. Both engines had to be replaced afterwards.

The dealer (third one) finally agreed there is an issue. They contacted Chrysler and they are tearing apart the head for possible replacement. Chrysler is also picking up the tab for a rental ($35/day), so if you have the issue, ask about it.

Here's the link to the thread.

The more information that I can get, the better the results will be. I think that, at the very least (assuming I get a decent sample size) it would either confirm or deny the likelihood of the issue being a manufacturing defect.
