Default PCM (powertrain control module)

Dealer just told me that my 2007 Rubicon unlimited's PCM is bad, needs replaced to the tune of $1050 plus labor. I see on line there are refurbished options for about 1/5 the cost. Has anybody gone that route? Results, good, bad? Hate to put out that much $ when there are more cost effective options. Thanks in advance for any/all responses..............

I had a 2000 Ram and used a refurbished unit back around 2012 and it is still running today. FYI - My son caused the problem in the first place.

Refurbished are ok. Trouble is unless you can change it in the dealer yard you will be looking at a tow to get it to a dealer or someone who can flash the program in. Good time to buy a full blown programmer system that is PC based (EG HP Tuners) as you get to play with other things inside the program. And you can upload your program before you change the ECU. Did the dealer say what the reason was for failed ECU?

the sites I've looked at ask for your VIN number to program the unit prior to shipping out. So hopefully that wouldn't be an issue. That said, has anybody had good luck with of the remanufactured sites? I've googled them and there are a few...... hoping someone has first hand experience they could share.
