parking on inclines
does it hurt the tranny in automatics when you shift from park to reverse on an incline. i always pull the e-brake before putting it in park on inclines but it still rolls back a little and has that nasty clunk when when i shift to reverse to back up. just wondering how detrimental this is to the tranny. i know squat about auto trannies so any mechanical knowledge is appreciated.

I know what you mean. Its not good for the car to resting all of its weight on the trans. Make it a good idea to pull the ebrake before you take your foot off the brake, once in park. This way the jeep wont rock backwards and rest on the trans. Not a trans expert, but I know it cant be good.

1. Pull up to your parking spot,
2. Pull the parking brake,
3. Place the gearshift in "Neutral",
4. Lift your foot off the brake pedal and let the Jeep's weight rest on the e-brake,
5. Then shift the gear into "Park".
A few times doing this and it will become habit. When you get back in your vehicle it will not be rough/hard shifting into Drive or Reverse.

Actually, it's better to do the following for auto tranny:
1. Pull up to your parking spot,
2. Pull the parking brake,
3. Place the gearshift in "Neutral",
4. Lift your foot off the brake pedal and let the Jeep's weight rest on the e-brake,
5. Then shift the gear into "Park".

Forgot to add that the Jeep will still travel if you apply the e-brake before lifting your foot from the brake pedal, depending on the direction of the slope and what gear you were in before applying the e-brake (Drive or Reverse).

not trying to start anything but i always thought an 'e-brake' was what the import street racer crowd used for drifting (sarcasm) my guess is that would be pretty hard to do in a JK unless maybe you were muddin'
i believe the term you were referring to is the emergency brake or the hand brake.
to each his own....
