If you do a search, then there are quite a few threads on this, but I have the same problem with mine...it burns about a quart every 1000 miles.

There was a rumor that the piston rings were installed upside down on some, but a guy that works for the engine manufacturing plant refuted that in a thread I started a while back? I haven't found a good reason so far in my searches so far, but it hasn't fouled my spark plugs terribly, and mine is outside the warranty so I'm just checking my oil often and it drives fine so far (57k miles)

Just search Oil Burning or Oil Sucking 3.8 and see for yourself what others say and think. Sorry you have the situation, I keep an eye on mine which burns/looses about 1/2 qt per 3k.

A guy that got a job at the health club where I work saw my jk and said, " Man, those new jeeps burn alotta oil. I've worked at Speedy Oil change for a couple years and alot of them came in with oil barely registering on the dipstick". He said the very last one he did couldn't have had 2 qts of oil in it.

Mine does the same thing. Some do and some dont, you just have on that does. Just make sure to check your oil often and you will be fine. My 08 now has 93k miles on it and is still running fine.

The first thing I'd check and do after each change, is there 6 quarts in it after a change. If you do it yourself, make sure you check the stick after adding exactly six quarts. If you want a little leeway add a half a quart more. I remember some saying the dipsticks are either short or the "safe" line is mis-marked. I keep a quart laying on its side next to the battery.

07 unlimited here and she doesn't seem to burn any oil. Guess I am lucky but I've never had any problems so far (knock on wood several times)

Default Cant make this stuff up

According to Chrysler my jeep holds 6 quarts of oil and I should change my oil every 6000 miles or six month, whatever comes first. This comes right from the owners manual. Chrysler stated verbally that it is normal for this engine to burn 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles. I can not get them to put that in writing. My dealer either can't or wont put that in writing. So lets do some easy basic math. If my engine holds six quarts of oil and I am suppose to change the oil every 6000 miles, HOWEVER I must add an extra quart every 1000 miles by design, then by the time 6000 miles comes around I have used 12 quarts of oil. To me that means I have 100% oil consuption and this is BAD. To Chrysler it means that is normal oil consuption for this engine.

I will post again in a couple of days the details of the maddness.

Try switching to a heavier weight oil
