Oil leak?? Need help
#11
there are no stupid questions on this site. You will find that most of us have or had oil burning issues if you search "oil consumption." many people attribute some of the oil burning to the low viscosity, or super thin, oil that chrysler recommends. The oil is possibly so thin that it is sucked past the piston rings and into the combustion chamber. Like others, i found that i lose less oil now that i use 20-50 rather than 5-20. And, my engine runs super super quiet i can't even tell it's running sometimes. Pretty much anything over the recommended weight/viscosity should improve things a little. But you'll probably continue burning oil to some degree. I lose about 1/2 qt every thousand mikes and it doesn't really bother me. Oil consumption can also occur with a faulty egr valve, which is pretty easy to replace with some basic tools and a few hours to kill.

If it's the 3.8 engine it's usually burning oil from worn rings or valve seals. In that case time for some engine tare down. Only oil leak I have seen on a 3.6 yet was at the back of the block on drivers side head. Can't remember what component it was from though.

Thanks for all the input guys. It does burn oil. Some days I can smell it, some days I can't like today. So we will see. Hopefully my motor doesn't go haha.

Has anyone suggested replacing the PCV valve? That has occasionally been the problem. $10 part 15 min job. There's some good write up info on the forum with photos and tips.
