Fascinating stuff.
Well, I tend to like the fact we've got sealed wheel bearings, especially after you've concluded the seal appears to do its job. I encountered a LOT of water earlier in the month when me and two trail pals were wheeling in Colorado; they're both doing wheel bearing repacks on all four corners before we go out again in August.
Anyway, thanks for the interesting dissection and discussion.

I wish the hub had roller bearings.

Good point.
I agree too, roller bearings would be preferred.
I failed to mention what was probably easy to infer from my post: my trail mates drive older iron, a '94 Rover and a mid-80s CJ. But I digress.

Your awsome. You just saved me from tearing apart a good hub to count them. The rear has 52 as well. The ford 60 I am putting up front has 60. I think it may be easier to have a new tone ring made for the rear with 60 teeth than to have the front tone ring changed.

Thank you for the tear-down and detailed pics. This is great info!
I don't want to generalize too much, but lots of folks will provide "information" based on assumptions when they're on the interweebs. It's nice to see someone posting up specific, detailed info with clear, labeled pics.
Your effort is very much appreciated, sir!

When I started this thread, I was disappointed the front hubs had ball bearings in them rather than tapered roller bearings, and in the fact the hubs are not rebuildable.
Well, my original hubs now have 262,000 miles on them, and are still going strong.
