Mine will lock up in 3rd at almost any speed. It locks as soon as the speed I want is reached; i.e. when I back off the throttle because I don't want to accelerate further. It stays locked, even during acceleration, as long as I don't push the pedal too hard.
It stays locked during deceleration until just before I bring the vehicle to a stop; maybe between 5 and 10 mph. When going down a long hill at road speed which is steep enough that I have completely backed off the throttle, it will stay locked, and engine braking is enhanced when needed by the computer's turning off of the fuel injectors.

When OD is not disabled, it goes into 4th gear and locks too soon, and it takes very little increased load to make it unlock. Being unlocked causes the fluid to heat up, so I leave OD off for any driving under 55 mph.
When I'm going 70 on the interstate, I'll hit the OD off button as I start going up a steep grade. It will downshift to 3rd, and the torque converter stays locked during the climb. Near the top, I'll hit the button again to let it go back into OD.

The Super Chips tuner really made these shift points better for me. I run a 305/70 r16 with 3.73 gears and I think its the perfect combo with super chips. When its not programmed I can't stand driving it but its not terrible. My good buddy has higher gears and I drive his JK and hate it. It's great off the stop light but on long trips I'd prefer my setup.

Dang it, ya had such a good thing going... C'mon, lock up in Drive at 10mph the engine would be turning like 300rpm.

Yeah, that's what I'm battling with mine, I like that it's pretty aggressive to shift up, there's just not enough torque to do anything at 40mph and 1200rpm.

I don't turn the OD button off, no need, if I lean into the throttle as far as I can before it downshifts, I can maintain 75 if there is the slightest downgrade. If there is any incline at all it won't hold speed in OD, I have to give it enough throttle to go ahead and downshift and get back to speed. Then I have to really coax it, like let off until I start slowing down, to get it back into OD. It's a constant struggle.

Perfect combo? That's like the same size tires as I'm running, only wider and same gears and mine is anemic on the highway. Super chips really makes that much difference?? What's so bad about your buddy's JK with shorter gears?

Now that I've read your profile, I'm not surprised yours behaves way different than mine with your Rubicon stock gears and tires. Maybe when I get 4.56s in they will be more comparable.

I've been driving the truck for 196k miles now. When it doesn't have the superchips on I hate driving it on the freeway. Shift points feel off on its own and you have to adjust the way you push the pedal. I think weight (bumpers especially) makes a big difference with gears also. But you and I are running the same and for prob about $200 on criagslist you can give it a shot. I think you will be quite surprised how awake it becomes. Keep in mind I drive fast too and want that top end. My JKU isn't a stranger to running 80-85 for extended periods of time. Sometimes much faster

I don't get it, maybe mine has low power issue too... I tried it again tonight, and I did get it to finally lock up in 3rd at 75mph, which is pretty much the only way I can get to 75, once it shifts up, it slows down and settles around 60-65 on flat ground if I keep it in OD. Is there any downside to running superchips? Sounds like a magic bullet if it really makes this engine output that much more power!

I run a superchips as well, for me- it took the delay out of the pedal. That's not what you asked though, you asked on downsides. There used to be concerns that it would leave a trace on the computer and that the dealer would void your powertrain warranty but having a 2011, I don't think that's an issue for you.

**If you ever take it in, just be sure to set it back to stock or explicitly tell them that you don't want any software upgrades done. It's much less likely that there's software updates to be done now than there was "back when", but even when I took mine in for the airbag recall a couple years back I was sure to request that they don't touch software without my permission. That being said....I'm changing other settings with Jscan that we used to think would break/ invalidate the superchips and everything seems to work fine.

Does it put out more power? Eh. But it make enough difference to be worthwhile.

It's enough of a difference especially if they can be purchased used. I got mine at the time for $220.

Flashpaq 3874 is what yall have right? They're selling online for $325-375 According to Superchips site, it has several built in tunes, Crawl, Economy, Performance, Tow, Heavy Tow and Mileage XS Save. I will need something like this to recalibrate my speedo when I change gears... I'll keep an eye on ebay and craigslist.
