I'm amazed, there is no reverse lockout on the 6 speed. I though I was shifting into 6th, almost put it in reverse. It could have been disastrous!



Not the best place to cut corners!

 

You would have never gotten it into reverse moving forward at any speed. Would grind like a motha and you would have been made aware of your fou pa immediately with no damage. (I know...it happened to me too)

I don't think my TJ had a reverse lock out either. In fact, I am not sure i have ever experienced one. Maybe I just don't pay attention.

these trannies take some getting used to.

 

You really have to work to put it there. When I first got mine, I had some trouble finding 6th with the shift and found that I was slamming it more towards reverse a lot of the time. Never got even a grinding noise.

 

I've had mine for about a month now and I swear that it is easier to get into reverse (grinding lol) than it is when I am parked.

I find that if I move the shifter all the way to the left then to the right that it will shift into reverse easier.

 

i dont see how you could manage to mistake reverse and sixth.

maybe on a import with a close gate shifter housings, but not in the jk.

 

I thought I was in 4th, moving to 6th.

My other car has reverse lockout. I'll get used to it. Only 500 k so far. Now I know to be careful.

 

what about 5th?

the only time i had a problem with the reverse is when i first got the jeep... i back into all my parking spots and i always threw it in 6th.

 

I had problems going from 4th to 6th and putting it into reverse as well when I first got the Jeep. Then I started to hit 5th first before 6th. When I do it that way it seems like there is a lock out because I can't seem to push it over into the Reverse "area" when I slide in down??? Anyone else notice this or is it just me?

 

I think that this is how the reverse lock out works in this 6 spd. If you go from 4th to 6th you just have to be carful not to put it into reverse.

 

When I first got mine I had trouble getting into 6th as well, until I got used to it (Its the only 6spd I've ever owned). The trick is to use a light touch when shifting into 6th.

Once you begin to feel resistance you're in position to move into 6th gear, if you go past the point where you begin to feel resistance, then you're in danger of hitting reverse.
