Default Need help with shifter

I have an '09 Rubicon Unlimited. I recently broke the bushing/grommet on the shifter for going from 2wd to 4wd, etc. I called the parts folks at the dealer to replace it, but they want to sell me the cable from the shifter to the xfer case. If anyone has had this problem and fixed it w/o havong to replace the cable pls let me know. Thanks!, THE OLD MAN

This is a really common thing and it requires the replacement of a $5 plastic bushing. HOWEVER, I fixed mine with a brass bushing for a Ford door hinge. I bought it at Autozone. I put an e-clip in the groove on the shaft to hold the cable in place. The cost for everything was less than $6. Taking the console out is a real pain in the ass though.

Good luck.

Took the Jeep to the dealer who "fixed it" by replacing the cable. Was still under warranty - 36mo/36k miles.

I had my dealer "fix it" under warranty by replacing the cable. Then... a couple months later, there started a tick-tick keeping beat with my wheel rpms... I look under there and see the loose cable rubbing on the driveshaft. Of course it tore the boot, and since the field replacable unit for the driveshaft boot is the whole driveshaft, the dealer replaced my complete front driveshaft... and since it was due to incorrect cable installation, under warranty(I'm sure they had Chrysler pay and not his service dept).
Moral of the story... grab a few spare plastic clips, e-clips, tie-wraps and whatever else you need so you can fix it yourself and don't have to waste time messing around with the incompetent dealers.

I fixed mine with a brass bushing for a Ford door hinge and an e-clip in the groove. Less than a couple of bucks to fix.
