Well it must have changed for 2013, it's 5w20, I checked my oil yesterday as I was searching for a head part number and it's clear as day on the oil fill cap. I was thinking where an I gonna find 5 quart jugs of 5w20. Maybe that explains why I'm getting 20.5 mpg on my second tank of gas?!?

Default Mobil 1 forever.

0-40w Mobil 1 in both Rubi's. Ticking noise down to a minimal can barely hear it. Oil changes at 5000 miles.

Damn they run super smooth with this weight.

To each his own.

The dealer accidently put 5/20 in my wrangler (I have the 3.6) and my engine DID NOT like it! it rattled like someone shaking a Krylon paint can! They changed it back to 5/30 and PRESTO, ran quiet until I had to have the Drivers side head replaced for ticking. LOL

I can say 20.5 would be sweet to see!!! Might deal with the rattling to get that MPG!!

My dealer did the same thing, engine started tapping but mine only got worse after they put 5w30 back in. For a month and a half they told me that it was normal and not to worry about it. After getting the bureau of automotive repair involved, now they all of a sudden want to replace both heads. Funny how it went from being a normal sound to throwing thousands of dollars at it.

Default Napa 5w30

Use what the oil cap says to. Keep all the recites,I keep a record of date and milege when changed. be sure whatever oil you use it meets the crysler spec.-6395. No ticking from my 2012. using Pensoil 5w30 dino oil now, will go syn. after 3000 miles.

I am not trying to bust anyone's balls, but this information is not entirely correct. In reference to a 5w-30, the 5w part means the viscosity rating at low temperatures, 0 deg C if I remember correctly. So at start up on a cold day, the oil acts like a SAE 5 fluid. Once the oil heats up to running temp, 100 deg C per testing, the oil viscosity changes and acts like a SAE 30. So, doing a drastic change like going from a 5w-20 to a 5w-50 WILL cause issues. Most motor manufactures will actually tell you to make small weight changes depending on the weather temperature. Something like using 5w-20 in the winter months and 10w-30 in the summer months. Jeep is just idiots and though one weight is easier to deal with.

And just to clarify, I am not swing to run 5w-20 in the 3.6L motor. I was just trying to illustrated the concept of the multi weight oil.

I have Napa full synthetic sitting in my 2012 JK right now. I have about 17,000 miles on the JK and about 2800 miles on this Napa oil. I do 5000 mile oil change intervals not the 8000 like is in the Jeep manual.

I don't like the Napa oil. The engine seems to tap more and the oil smells bad. I am not sure if the smell is due to the oil or a bad head. However, ever other oil change I used 5W-30 Pennzoil Platinum with no issues of loud tapping or bad smells. I will be going back to my trusted oil (or G Oil full synthetic) at 20,000 miles.

The 2013 uses 5W-20. The 2012 calls for 5W-30.

I am new to this forum so if I am saying things that have been beat to death let me know. The oil change interval has also changed to 10000 miles or one year for the 2013. The required interval will also be displayed on the instrument panel based on how you drive so it could be less than 10000 and one yr. By the way for you M1 fans, and I am one, M1 does not presently meet the Chrysler spec 8395 or whatever it is as Mobil has not provided Chrysler with the data required. Do to this, and to make sure I keep my warrantee in effect, I plan to switch to Pennzoil Ultra which does meet the spec. With all the Pentastar head problems I don't want to give Jeep any excuse not to repair my engine. I think the issue has been resolved for the 2013's but only time will tell.

i know many of you change your oil much more frequently than the limit Chrysler suggests and I also know many of you do not use synthetic oil. I don't wish to get into that as it becomes a chocolate vs vanilla or manual vs automatic argument to which there is no answer.
