Muffler Rusty?

Do they use road salt in the winter there? They do in Ohio and it eats vehicles, the underbody of every vehicle I've owned has shown the effects of it. I'm even seeing surface rust on the shocks and axles of my JK, so the exhuast has no chance of being rust free. And I keep my Jeep clean. I would either paint it or replace it with a higher quality SS exhaust.

Yes, the 304 stainless on my '88 Cherokee looked new for the 10 (or so) years it was on it. Our 409 stainless is supposed to last just as long, sans the good looks.
I'll let the 409 stainless on mine get stained with surface rust and see how long it lasts. I don't think anyone sees more salt than we do in Maine. They even put down liquid salt solution before it snows.
If it gets too bad, I'll paint the visible part, though.

Would I? No way. I took the $5 solution and just painted it black, but for someone else that is dead set on having the shiney new appearance long-term it is a valid option. I'm driving a Mazada6 right now for a DD, and the dual exhaust mufflers on that thing look like new, and it's five years old.

I removed and wire-wheeled the entire muffler (unnecessary) and sprayed it with two coats of rustoleum high-temp black. Some of the paint is still barely visible under all the mud, and it doesn't appear to have any surface rust. Might have been more to the point to paint it brown...

we DO use salt on the roads. but i see 07's all the time with new looking mufflers and mine looks like it has 80,000 miles instead of 8,000.
i still need to take a picture and post.
also, i am taking it to the dealership this week.
will post pic & whatever the dealer says...

Just did this. Best 5 minute mod for the JK yet. I took a green scrub pad and knocked off the surface mud and rust, then 5 minutes with Rustoleum High Temp Flat Black and its good to go. Silver jeep looked cheap with a rusty silver muffler back there. Now its gone. Tailpipe too.
