Default Mobil 1 dry starts

So IK changed my oil last week and Auto Zone had a deal on 5 quarts of synthetic and a mobil 1 oil filter for $30, well I went with it and now I'm getting dry starts. My question is how bad are dry starts for your engine and can it wait till my next oil change to go with another filter? I will most likely just buy another filter but I was just curious on how a dry start cajn effect your motor.

I swapped mine out right away, couldn't stand hearing the clatter everytime I started it.

You can change out your filter without draining your oil pan. You might lose a little bit in the filter but not much. There are numerous threads on the forum about which filters have better anti drainback properties than others. The choice is yours, there are several good ones mentioned.

I just went through the same situation with a Mobil 1 filter and synthetic oil. I switched to a Fram filter and the dry start went away totally, as already stated you can change out just the filter without dropping your oil. Just let it sit for a while and then change the filters, you'll lose an once or two maybe.

Default Get a FRAM filter

Your crankshaft has a film of motor oil from the last time you ran the motor, this will protect the crankshaft on startup, however for long term peace of mind put a FRAM filter on your Jeep. It will cure the problem......

To save you a little time searching, I seem to recall the best filters to use are mopar, wix and FRAM (but make sure it's the ToughGuard). I use the Wix myself.

I wouldn't count on that. The noise you are hearing is metal to metal contact which should never occur.

In the best case scenerio, you're hearing valve noise caused by hydraulic lifters that aren't fully pumped up due to the lack of oil.

In the worst case scenerio you have metal to metal contact between the crankshaft and bearings.

Why would changing oil cause metal to metal contact? I would agree that it would have to be the valve in the filter also causing the lack of oil. Although, Mobil 1 is not as good of oil as it used to be it should still be better than regular dino oil. Mobil 1 used to be made with 100% syn. oil (group 4 pao's) like Amsoil and Schaeffers now it is hydrocracked dino oil.

Huh? Changing the oil isn't causing the noise. Many people are having problems with Mobil 1 filters (as well as other brands). The anti-drainback valve doesn't appear to work correctly on the Wrangler for some reason. This allows the oil to drain out of the filter while the vehichle sits. Then we you start the vehicle, for several seconds the engine is starved of oil because the oil filter must fill before oil is delivered to the engine.

The results is noise on start up which is an indication of metal to metal contact.

I understand! When I first read the post it appeared to me he was saying the Mobil 1 oil was causing dry starts.
