I ordered a Sahara Unlimited, and everyone that sees one on the street makes that Hummer comment to me. I don't really care, I don't think it's a bad thing. The Hummer essentially took the boxy philosophy of the Jeep and made it into a luxurious, appealing package to the world's population. The G-wagon from Benz is too expensive, and boxy Land Rovers (like the Defender) are hard to find. Since Hummer beat Jeep to the finish line with a 4-door 4WD box, it's only natural that the comparisons will be made. Anyways, my brother has the H3 and it's a fine vehicle. Does what it's supposed to: gets through deep snow, hauls his groceries, he feels good in it because it's not a minivan.
Everyone knows Jeep, it's just that Hummers wound up in the public eye quickly and suffered from overexposure in rap videos and celebrity tabloids.
Most people I know (laypeople, they don't know anything about off-roading or which brands outperforms what) seem to routinely make the following assumptions:
1. Jeeps are rugged outdoorsy vehicles that go-anywhere/do anything. Most people know that the Jeep progenitors played some role in defeating the Third Reich.
2. Hummers are basically show vehicles, but most people anecdotally think the H1 is unstoppable.
3. Land Rovers are expedition vehicles for the African Serengetti or Kenyan lion reserves.

i'm not really sure why everyone is so anti hummer. i understand you loving jeeps but deep down inside everyone would agree the original h1s are pretty bad ass and the h3s are actually quite capable 4x4s. the h2s do suck however.
i don't have my jk yet, but i really could care less if someone said it looks like a hummer, odds are they're driving some lame ass camry.
:edit: here's a quick comparison of a 4 door rubi and an h3, neither of them are mine. if it's yours and you don't like me using your photos let me know and i'll remove them.:
of course we know the difference in an h3 and a jeep but from the outside looking in it's easy to see the similarities. for example at first glance i would think the hyundai sonata looks exactly like a kia spectra but the kia owner would not. apples and oranges, i know but you get the point. hopefully.

The other day, I was out at the pump. An H3 pulls up on the other side. Dude gets out, and starts pumping; not a word out of him. His wife/girlfriend/ walks up to him for something, looks at the JK and says "Can we do that with our Jeep?" (she was pointing at the Freedom Top...had front panels off). He told her that their ride was a Hummer. She told me she loved my Jeep...dude was bummin'. He still had his temp-tags on.

The JK looks like a Jeep, but the H3 looks like the old Dodge Powerwagon.

Hummers are ridiculous vehicles that serve a singular purpose: To look good, and get attention. When it comes to actually being able to GO off-road, they fall pretty flat on their face (not to mention that most of their owners will never SEE off-road conditions).
Jeeps, on the other hand, are versatile vehicles that serve multiple purposes. They can look good, but when it comes to off-roading, the Jeep is KING (the Hummer is a drag queen, at best).
