EDIT: Sorry guys, I forgot the Unlimited has a 3500lb rating. Still 4500 means you're liable in an accident as other people have suggested, and i'd be concerned with over heating aswell as towing power, and most importantly; braking.

As my OP says- my trailer has dual axle brakes and I have a great brake controller wires in the jeep.

How big of a lift / wheel size are you wishing to go? I didn't notice any adverse changes when i went from stock to a 33" tire and 2.5" lift. It's darn near the same.

The 3:73 gearing is fine with my 6 speed. I am not sure how an auto would do. Again, I think the big question would be how big of a lift & tire are you planning on running?

Not planning any particular size. Sounds like any increase in size will be a degradation, so I probably will keep it stock size.

Rob,

The towing over mountain passes was a conversation I had directly with a Jeep Engineer. He ultimately said it was rated VERY conservative for liability.

Aftery conversation, 5,000 lbs doesn't seem unreasonable. The JK engine power and cooling system may not be a fan of it though!

To your question: re-gear will be a must or you will notice it.

Sent from some string and a few tin cans.
