Default Just got my Jk friday Few ?s now

Hi. Everyone! I just my My Jk on Firday. I have a few Questions about some things. This is my first Wrangler. I got mine with the dual tops. I have not taken the top off yet because it is starting to get cool out. But right now the soft top is still in the back just like they shiped it. Do I have to take it off ? or can I wait untill spring time when I pull the hard top off to move it around. I was reading the book, It says to pull it off when the hard top is to be put back on.

Also I have read many times that the 3 peice top tends to leak. Now the question I have for some of you that had yours leak was. Did you break the seal on it. Or did it leak before the top was ever pulled off. Because I was thinking of putting some pinstriping on the inside to make sure it all lines up correct.

Thanks Jason

First, welcome aboard, and congorats on your new Jeep!

The site is undergoing an upgrade at the moment and acting a bit flukey, it'll pass.

I cant answer your leak questions, as i didnt bother with the hardtop.

It says in the manual that both tops installed is only for shipping purposes, and it should be removed.

from the manual, page 118
"DUAL TOP — IF EQUIPPED

If your vehicle is equipped with a Dual Top,
you must remove one of the tops from the vehicle. If the soft top
is removed, the pivot brackets must also be removed
from the sport bar. The soft top was installed at the
factory for shipping purposes only. The soft top and the
hard top are to be used independently. Removal is
mandatory to prevent any possible wear and tear on the
soft top. Your vehicle warranty will not cover damage
resulting from both tops remaining on the vehicle at the
same time for extended periods of time."

I waited about 2 or 3 weeks with the soft top inside the hard top before I got around to removing it, and haven't seen any evidence of damage to either top. Then again, I wouldn't recommend waiting until Spring '08 to do it!

I never had my hardtop leak, so don't know about the positioning. However, I will say that there seem to be next-to-zero complaints about leaking hard tops
lately... this may be due to the nice weather (people running soft tops or no top), or it may be that Jeep finally solved the leak issue in new-production models. In any case, I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens to you.

Welcome to the Jeep community Jason, you're gonna love it!! I am no master, but I'll put my two cents in about your questions. I got the dual top as well and only experienced the leak after I pulled the top off to get the soft top out. I did realize though, that it was more my fault then it was with the seal issue that has been around. You really can't mess up the re-install of the hard top, everything fits pretty snug. When I experienced the drips on the dashboard, I would just re-tighten what I could or take out the front panels and re-install them. The bolts that screw into the roll bar above your head always seem to work their way loose. So every couple of days, I would just reach up and make sure they were tight. Too tight will mess up the seal as well. When I am done putting on the hard top, I look at the top of the roof to make sure everything is flush and that is usually good enough and drip free.

I don't think leaving the soft top in the Jeep will harm it. I took mine out because the book said to. It's not like the hard top is putting undue pressure on the soft top. It is a huge pain in the keister trying to get stuff in and out of the tailgate though with the soft top there. Your call.

Again, welcome and congrats on the Jeep. Have fun.

All of the DCX tops (soft and hard, sunrider and non-sunrider) have leaking problems. Welcome aboard!

I only have th hard top. I live in south louisiana nice and warm, but also wet without warning; I (knock on wood) do not have a leaking problem and I usually leave the bolt thru the roll bar off to make removal and reinstall a few seconds job.

Just to make your winter use of the tailgate area easier ,
I would put the soft top in a safe place out of the way.

That is just my two cents on the subject!!!!! And good luck with whatever you choose to do. And welcome to the Jeep family and remember if you see another wrangler WAVE you'll feel better about the situation even if the other driver is too preoccupied to wave back!

I got both tops and I got my 07 back in Feb when it was still cold. I loosened all the screws on the hardtop (get the hex tool) and with the help of a couple friends lifted the hardtop up enough at the back to slide out the soft top. You don't have to remove it to get the soft top out. I did it weeks after I got it (when I got a nice day). As for leaking, mine never leaked. Good luck with the new jeep!

That's awesome. I guess I meant to say that all types of the tops have had leaking problems; not that everyone's top is leaking.
