I had a starter do this exact same thing on my Motorhome. The solonoid stuck and the starter kept spinning. It started to smoke and when I would shut off the motor it would sound like it was still trying to start or diesel. My motor home has an electrical cut off switch so I finally stopped it by disconnecting the battery with that switch. It damaged my starter but still worked. It finally died a month or so later and I had it replaced. No more problems.

I bet the starter will fix your problem. Not sure if our jeeps use the classic solonoid but be sure. Also check that heat shield as well. Don't get too worked up. I bet thats it for sure.

Just got my Jeep back today. Turns out when the past dealership was doing the TSB's they chaffed some wires a little bit, which in turn caused them to short and therefore make my starter go crazy. They replaced the started a long with the wires and all seems good. The only thing is I still smell something burning everytime I get done driving it. Could this just be the new starter and everything breaking in? Either way I am just happy to have my Jeep back.

And once again guys and gals (if you're out there) thanks for all the advice and trying to keep my spirit high. If it wasnt for this forum with all the info and a place to vent I probably would have went crazy.

Thanks,
JP

Good to hear you're back in business! I wonder if the residual smell is just that something got on the exhaust?

Good luck, and have a safe finish to your trip!

Thats Great. That makes sense. Sounds like you were lucky to get as far as you did.

I bet your smell goes away after a few miles. Now go get some mud on her.

Jeff
