Is it auto? Did you remove the belt to eliminate the front rotating assembly?

thanks for the reply , it is a 2008 Jeep jk with auto transmission, unfortunately it is not a pulley and the noise is located somewhere inside the engine

It sounds like pully or a one of the items driven by the belt. Maybe water pump, alternator, etc.

Achilles - it sounds like a rotating scraping sound so my best guess is to eliminate the rotating assembly then go into the torque converter flex plate area. Any foreign objects wrapped around the bottom pulley etc?

Thanks for the answer ! I took it to my mechanic and he said it’s coming from the crankshaft , and not from any pulley on the belt area , it’s just odd to me that such a sound is coming from the Crankshaft with no ticking , any guess what it could be ?

Hey guys , the cause of the sound was a bad starter , after a couple days that the noise started the starter stopped working , after removing the starter something was loose inside and was causing that sound

Aha! near the TC area. Starter was probably staying engaged. If you used the Jeep with bad starter still engaged it was probably spinning about 10 times faster than the engine rpm.

Thanks for closing the loop. I had the starter stay engaged back in the 60s with my VW Karmann Ghia. It didn't make noise; the starter stopped working. It was a mass of metal chunks inside the starter housing. I poured the chunks that fell out back into the housing and screwed it back together. I remember feeling a bit guilty turning it in to retrieve my core charge. No way it was rebuildable.

BTW, next time you're chasing down a whine, suggest you use a mechanic's stethoscope. They're quite inexpensive and easily found at most auto parts stores ...
